UI/UX design for startups — what to build before your seed round

What an early-stage startup actually needs from a UI/UX designer before raising: a landing page that converts, an onboarding flow that retains, and a design system that survives the next 18 months.

Most pre-seed founders ask for 'a designer' when what they actually need is three different things sequenced over three months. Here's the order I run for UI/UX design for startups heading into a seed raise.

Month 1 — the landing page

The landing page is the only thing investors and early users see before they decide whether you're real. It is not a brochure — it's a pitch deck with a CTA. Build:

  • A hero that explains the product in seven words
  • One scrolling demo of the actual interface
  • Three proof points (logos, numbers, or quotes)
  • A single CTA — waitlist, demo, or sign-up. Not all three.

For an example of the conversion-first approach, see the GoFund Trade marketing site.

Month 2 — the onboarding flow

If users churn in the first session, the rest of the product doesn't matter. The onboarding has to do one job: get the user to the first 'aha' moment in under 90 seconds. Designed as a flow, not a screen — every step has a measurable drop-off you can fix.

Month 3 — the design system

Once the product has shape, build a system. Tokens, typography, spacing, components — in Figma and in code. Not a 200-page brand book. A working library your engineers can ship from. The Talabat device design is an example of a system carrying across many surfaces without breaking.

What to skip until Series A

  • Mascot illustrations and brand characters
  • Custom variable typefaces
  • Motion principles documents
  • Anything that takes longer to design than to ship
Design debt is cheap at pre-seed. It's expensive after product-market fit.

Working with one freelance designer vs an agency

Through seed, one senior freelancer is almost always the right answer. Lower overhead, faster decisions, no account managers. Get in touch if you want to talk through scope for your stage.
